Common questions
How many square feet does a gallon of paint cover?
A 3.64 L gallon of emulsion covers roughly 400 sq ft in one coat and 200 sq ft in two coats on smooth plaster. Textured or rough-cast walls take up to twice as much, and the first coat on fresh putty always drinks more.
Do I need primer and putty?
On new plaster, yes: two coats of putty give a smooth surface, and a coat of primer seals it so the paint does not soak in unevenly. Repainting a sound painted wall needs neither, just washing and a light sanding.
Gallon or drum?
A drum is four gallons (14.56 L) and is cheaper per litre. Buy drums for the main colour and gallons for accent walls and trims. Keep the batch numbers the same for one room.
When can I paint new plaster?
Wait 3–4 weeks after plastering so it dries through. Paint on damp plaster peels and shows salt patches within months.
